There exists no biochemical test allowing to define the pathogenicity of a bacterium, still less for a Vibrionaceae. Two essential characters are to be retained to hold responsible an isolated germ, for an illness: 1) the binding factor, the identification is difficult but a double diffusion of agar should simplify the method; 2) the search for the choleric toxin or a common part of the choleric toxin (toxin LT or ST of E. coli ). Here again, simplified techniques may be used. The acquirement of a plasmid responsible for the binding factor or for the toxin production of the non-pathogenic Vibrionaceae in the origin of certain epidemic diseases in France and in the world. Frequently, epidemics due to common germs (Aeromonas hydrophila of Africa) lead to... |

Protozoa population, microbial synthesis efficiency and rumen degradability of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber in cattle fed on diets with different lipid rates were evaluated. Nine 16-month-old Nelore young bulls, cannulated in the rumen and duodenum, weighing 232 ± 35 kg, were used in the trial. Experimental design consisted of a 3 x 3 square in triplicate, comprising the following treatments: 2, 4 and 6% lipid in diet. In situ degradability was assessed by rumen incubation of corn silage, soybean, soybean meal and citrus pulp during 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96h. The flow of microbial nitrogen and microbial efficiency were not influenced (p > 0.05) by the inclusion of lipid levels in the diet. When the animals received diet with 4%... |

Since the discovery of hydrothermal vents in 1977, a small number of studies have allowed the isolation and characterization of microorganisms that can withstand high pressures and temperatures. Among these, Pyrococcus yayanosii, a hyperthermophilic archaea of the order Thermococcales, came from the Ashadze site (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) at 4100 m depth. This species represents the first organism both hyperthermophilic and strict piezophilic described to date. It cannot divide at pressures below 20 MPa and its optimal growth pressure is 52 MPa. In order to study the mechanisms used by this species to grow under high pressures, transcriptomics (DNA chips) and proteomics (LC-MS/MS) experiments have been carried out at different pressures, notably sub- and... |

ABSTRACT Four soybean meal-based diets containing increasing levels of an enzyme complex (E50, E100, E150 and E200 at 50, 100, 150 and 200 g ton-1, respectively) and one soybean meal-based diet without the enzyme complex (E0) were fed in triplicate to M. liza juveniles in a semi-static flow system with 20 fish per tank for 75 days. There were no differences between the treatments for animal performance parameters, but fish fed the enzyme complex treatment exhibited significantly (P<0.05) higher values of calcium bone retention compared with control fish. Although there was no relationship between bacterial counts in different sections of the gastrointestinal tract or enzyme levels, filamentous bacteria were increased in E50 compared with E150. All of... |

Introduction : "The occurrence of pathogenic microorganisms in seawater or in shellfish could exist anytime sewage from human or animal origin would be discharged to the coast" (Metcalf, 1982). According to the diseases occurring in the human population or in animals, pathogens might be present in recreational waters or in shellfish. Thus, the presence of human enteric viruses (norovirus, astrovirus, rotavirus, hepatitisAvirus (HAV)) and pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, etc.) has been reported in coastal areas for a long time (Colwell, 1978; Metcalf, 1978; Melnick et al., 1979; Grimes, 1991; Bosch et al., 2001;Kong et al., 2002). These... |
